Where to See Illustration and Design in Bangkok

Bangkok has one of the liveliest design scenes in Southeast Asia, and much of it is easy to visit. Opening hours and programmes change, so check before you go.

Thailand Creative and Design Center (TCDC)

Housed in the restored Grand Postal Building by the river in Bang Rak, TCDC runs a large design library and materials collection, exhibitions and talks. It is the obvious first stop for designers, and the library alone can fill an afternoon.

Bangkok Art and Culture Centre (BACC)

Opposite the MBK area near National Stadium, the BACC hosts contemporary art exhibitions across several floors, with small independent galleries, bookshops and craft stores on the lower levels. Illustration and graphic design often feature in its programme.

Bangkok Design Week

Each year, usually in the first part of the year, Bangkok Design Week spreads exhibitions, installations, workshops and open studios across neighbourhoods such as Charoen Krung and Talat Noi. It is the best moment to meet local studios and illustrators.

Markets and pop-ups

Night markets and weekend creative markets are where many young illustrators sell prints, zines, stickers and clothing. Look out for art book fairs and zine fests, which appear several times a year.

Neighbourhoods to explore

  • Charoen Krung and Talat Noi: galleries, studios and cafés in old shophouses near the river.
  • Ari: a quieter area of independent shops and cafés popular with creatives.
  • Siam and Pathumwan: the BACC and plenty of bookshops with design sections.

Tips for visiting illustrators

  1. Carry a small sketchbook; the street details are endless.
  2. Bring business cards or a QR code to your portfolio; people at openings are approachable.
  3. Respect photography rules in galleries and ask before photographing artists’ stalls.
